Buhurt, Lotus-branded resorts, trend spreading, a niche Twitter tool making $3k/month,...
Hey,
this is Jakob Greenfeld, author of the Business Brainstorms newsletter - every week I write this email to share the most interesting trends, frameworks, opportunities, and ideas with you.
Let's dive in!
💡 Opportunities
“premade meal plans are unrealistic. we need AI / automation that reads calendars, processes lunch & din mtgs (ie scrape restaurant menu), & outputs choices for you to stay within your macros. maybe overkill but i would pay. also can rec restaurant & order if im creating invite + fills in meal gaps w doordash order” - Sara Du
“Tinder testing a $500/month plan might seem crazy… But I think more subscription apps should try it.” - Olivia Moore
Take any popular consumer or prosumer app and ask yourself: What would it take to start charging 10x or 100x the current price?
One example I’ve written about before is StackOverflow. I would happily pay $50 per month if I could just ask my questions in an otherwise silent Telegram channel and get quality answers in a matter of minutes. At $500/month, imagine the following: you have a special shortcut that launches immediately an IM or phone call with a relevant expert. That definitely would be worth $500+ a month to me.
“Business that would crush: Daycare that costs 3x as much but offers specialized training for 2 hours a day in baseball, basketball, golf, soccer.” - Nick Huber
“Free business idea: White Lotus-branded resort properties that are part-relaxation, part-murder mystery game during your stay.” - Alex Lieberman
Also: “Netflix should do Knives Out themed mystery escape rooms” - Joey Daoud
“Business Idea: Yelp for Podcast episodes. SMS based. Direct feedback to the creators. Think Beehiiv has a feature like that for newsletters?” - Sun Shak

👨🎓 Framework
The Framework: Position yourself for when a trend spreads to a new location.
Explanation: If a thing takes off in one country, there’s a good chance it’ll explode in other countries a little later. Bonus points if you clone already proven business models.
Examples: While Pickleball is exploding in the US, it’s still largely unknown in Europe. So now would be a perfect time to start, for example, a localized version of The Dink (popular pickleball newsletter making $$$).
Tip: To discover thousands of trends taking off right now, check out Under the Radar. It’s a free tool I built and am using myself to find the trends covered in this newsletter.
📈 Trend Signal
Gateball is a team sport that originated in Japan and is played with wooden mallets and small balls on a rectangular court. The objective of the game is to hit the balls through gates, which are located at various points on the court, and score points. The game is similar to croquet, but is typically played on a smaller scale and with different rules.
It is a popular sport in Japan and is slowly gaining popularity in the US.
Wood chopping as a competitive sport, also known as wood chopping or lumberjack sports, involves various events in which participants compete in skills related to the traditional practice of chopping wood.
Buhurt is a sport that involves medieval armored combat. Participants wear full armor and use weapons such as swords, shields, and maces to engage in mock battles. The goal is to defeat the opposing team or individual by striking them with a weapon in a designated target area. Buhurt competitions can take place in a variety of settings, from outdoor fields to indoor arenas.
The sport originated in Eastern Europe and has since spread to other parts of the world, with international competitions and leagues being held regularly.
