Athletic Greens used to be a sketchy looking affiliate offer in 2011. Ranked #1 on Clickbank and was promoted by every direct response marketer.
Always inspiring to see humble beginnings like this and a good reminder that most businesses are not sexy from day 1.
Success comes first, then profits can be used for a brand glowup. Definitely something a lot of people get backwards.
In the early days the only thing that matters is making money no matter how.
Pretty sure the brand glowup in many cases does note have a meaningful positive impact on the bottom line. Itβs primarily driven by the founderβs ego. Definitely cooler to say βIβm the founder of Athletic Greensβ now than back when it was a Clickbank product.

After working with 100+ companies on sales, I feel confident to say this is completely false. (Peter probably wrote this before discovering Nicotine.)
The product or service you offer is responsible for 70% of the success you see in any sales efforts. Without a good product or service youβre screwed no matter what. Might be a different story when it comes to marketing and b2c. But there simply are no sustainable hacks that will convince smart professionals to buy junk.

Cool example of an idea at the intersection of single-purpose devices and AI I talked about a few weeks ago.

I coded an AI agent that continuously scours the internet for trends, brainstorms opportunities at the intersection of them, and categories and ranks them.
Service Business Opportunities:

Ransomware negotiation + Secure data handling in breaches: Develop a consulting service specializing in post-breach management, offering ransomware negotiation assistance along with secure data recovery and sanitization services to prevent future leaks or misuse of sensitive information.
Hardware Opportunities:
TTS + Local Processing: Develop a privacy-focused, real-time TTS application for local devices, providing secure voice synthesis for sensitive environments like law firms or hospitals.
Advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology + Infrared tech: Start a business providing retrofit kits for older cars to upgrade them with the latest non-invasive alcohol detection systems, ensuring compliance with new regulations.
Accessibility-first devices + Remote caregiving solutions: Design a wearable device tailored for individuals with disabilities that connect to a network of remote caregivers, enabling immediate assistance and social interaction.
Advanced prevention tech + Privacy concerns: Develop a privacy-first, user-consented vehicle monitoring system that provides driving assistance without storing or transmitting data externally unless explicitly permitted by the user in emergency situations.
Passive sensors + Medical crisis intervention: Create a car-integrated medical alert system that uses passive biometric sensors to detect potential medical emergencies, alerting emergency services while ensuring the vehicle can safely navigate to a stop.
SaaS Opportunities:
Generative AI + Open Source Software: Build a platform that aggregates open-source generative AI models tailored for different artistic styles and niches. Offer a subscription service for artists to access premium features like higher resolution outputs or custom style requests.
Digital Art and Painting + AI-Assisted Creativity: Develop an app that uses generative AI to help users create digital comics or graphic novels, streamlining the storyboard and character design process with intuitive AI suggestions based on plot input.
Other:
Conversational AI + Gaming Integration: Build an in-game AI companion with dynamic voice interaction capabilities, improving immersion and personalized gameplay experiences.
